After scoring a century, Khawaja said, I was told that I cannot play spin.

Australian opener Usman Khawaja was all smiles after completing a special century on Indian soil and he can’t remember ever smiling like this after scoring a century. He never dreamed of scoring a hundred on India tour as he used to carry ‘drinks’ to the ground on the previous tours in 2013 and 2017. But he proved to be Australia’s best batsman on this tour. He faced the best of India’s attack for six hours, adding an unbeaten 104 in the team’s 255 for four at stumps on the first day of the fourth and final Test on Thursday.

The joy and pain could be felt in his words, he said, “I don’t think I’ve ever smiled so much after scoring a hundred, it was emotion.” I have already done two Test tours of India (2013 and 2017). Used to carry ‘drinks’ in eight Test matches and this time I got a chance. Cricket Australia gave 36-year-old Khawaja a chance after trying openers like Marcus North and Chris Rogers.

He said, “Throughout my career I was told that I cannot play spin, so I never got a chance to play in India. He said, “So going to the crease and scoring a hundred in India was fantastic because five years ago if you had asked me, I would have thought you were ‘crazy’.” Born in Islamabad and brought up in Queensland, the cricketer said, “I never expected it (to score a century in India) so got very emotional.” ,

So did he agree with Cricket Australia’s opinion that he can’t play spin? He said, “Maybe to some extent.” But when people start saying it, then even a thought becomes a reality. Whenever I used to get out on a spin ball, people would say ‘you can’t play spin’. I might have started believing it.
