Amelia Kerr’s all-round play helped Mumbai beat RCB

Amelia Kerr’s all-round performance helped Mumbai Indians beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by four wickets in their last league match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), here on Tuesday. Mumbai Indians achieved the target in 16.3 overs after restricting RCB to 125 for nine. This was ACB’s sixth defeat in eight matches. After taking three wickets for 22 runs in four overs, Kerr hit four fours in his unbeaten innings of 31 runs in 27 balls with the bat. He got Mumbai out of a difficult situation by sharing a 47-run partnership with Pooja Vastrakar (19) for the fifth wicket.

Chasing the target, Healy Mathews (24 off 17 balls) and Yastika Bhatia (30 off 26 balls) shared a 53-run partnership to get Mumbai off to a flying start. But after returning to the pavilion within eight balls, Harmanpreet Kaur and Net Sciver Brunt could not stay at the crease for long. After this, Pooja and Kerr batted carefully to bring the team closer to the target. Kanika Ahuja, however, made Pooja and Isabel Wong (0) walk in consecutive balls in the 16th over.

Earlier, Mumbai bowlers proved the decision of bowling captain Harmanpreet Kaur right by winning the toss. Mathews and Saika Ishaq also bowled economically. Kerr and Ishaq shared 13 wickets each and joined Sophie Eccleton as the top wicket-takers in the league. Having lost five matches in a row, RCB are left behind in the race for the top three teams that will play the two-match knockout round.

Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, have lost two matches in a row and will need a thumping win in this match to stay on top of the table. Mumbai succeeded on the fourth ball itself when Sophie Devine (0) and Smriti Mandhana fell victim to a misunderstanding which resulted in Devine’s run out. Mandhana scored 24 runs in 25 balls with the help of three fours and a six. She was dismissed after playing a bad shot off Kerr. Ellyse Perry (29 off 28 balls) took time to settle down and opened her arms in the tenth over by hitting Ishaq for two consecutive fours.

RCB’s score was 56 for two after ten overs. Heather Knight scored 12 runs in the 11th over. Kerr trapped him at long-out. Knight shared a 26-run partnership with Perry. Kerr sent Kanika Ahuja (12) to the pavilion, whose stumping was done by Yastika Bhatia. Nat Sciver Brunt dismissed Perry and Shreyanka Patil (four). Richa Ghosh scored 29 runs in 13 balls with the help of three fours and two sixes. Wong took the last two wickets.
