Amlan, Sreesankar and Jyoti start home season with easy wins

Sprinter Amlan Borgohain of Assam, long jumper M Sreeshankar and 100m hurdler Jyoti Yaraji of Andhra Pradesh started the home season on a bright note by winning gold medals at the AFI Indian Grand Prix-3 athletics meet. Twenty-four-year-old Borgohain achieved double success by winning the 100m and 200m. Borgohain, who took a break after the Asian Indoor Championships in February, clocked 10.50 seconds to leave Odisha’s Amiya Kumar Malik behind.

He then got back on the track in less than an hour and won the 200 meters in 21.20 seconds. Commonwealth Games silver medalist Sreeshankar won gold in long jump with a jump of 7.94m. Jyoti, who took a break after the Asian Indoor Championships like Borgohain, clocked 13.44 seconds to win the gold medal in the 100m race. Maharashtra’s Aishwarya Mishra has become the third athlete from India to complete the women’s 400m race in less than 54 seconds.

He won the race on Monday by clocking 53.63 seconds. In the men’s 400m race, Mohammad Ajmal won the gold medal. He clocked 46.63 seconds. Hima Das won the women’s 200m while Karnataka’s GK Vijay Kumari made a stunning return to the national level competition after five years by winning the gold in the 800m.
