ATK Mohun Bagan will be called Mohun Bagan Super Giants from June 1

Mohun Bagan’s stakeholders on Wednesday announced that they will drop the ATK prefix from the name of the 133-year-old city football legend, following a long-standing demand of the fans. The club is primarily owned by the RP Sanjiv Goenka (RPSG) Group. From June 1, it will be known as Mohun Bagan Super Giants. The Goenka Group has followed its Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise in this matter. The IPL team name of this franchise is Lucknow Super Giants. His previous IPL team was known as Pune Super Giants.

“Following today’s board meeting, the name of the club will be Mohun Bagan Super Giants (MBSG) with effect from June 1, 2023,” Mohun Bagan club said. ATK Mohun Bagan won their first Indian Super League (ISL) title this season with a 4-3 win over former champions Bengaluru FC in a penalty shootout in March this year. After becoming the ISL champions, Goenka had said that the team would drop the ATK prefix. However, he did not announce any date for it then. Two-time champions ATK were earlier known as Atlético de Kolkata due to their partnership with the Spanish giants based in Madrid.

Atlético Madrid, however, sold its 25 percent stake to the RPSG group after three years. Since then this team was known as ATK. The RPSG Group merged the two clubs by buying a majority (80 per cent) stake in Mohun Bagan ahead of the 2020–21 season. ATK Mohun Bagan came into existence from June 1, 2020. The fans, however, did not like the name, and whenever the team played at the Salt Lake Stadium, they carried banners demanding that the name ATK be removed.
