Barcelona and Atletico out of Champions League, Liverpool move on
Barcelona crashed out of the Champions League football tournament with a 0–3 loss against Bayern Munich. Atletico Madrid also failed to make the next round after a 2-2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen. Atlético had received a penalty kick in the final moments but despite this the team failed to score and Porto made it to the knockouts. Porto had earlier defeated group toppers Bruges 4-0.
Spain’s two giants Barcelona and Atletico Madrid will no longer be a part of the pre-quarterfinals of Europe’s top club competition. Liverpool beat Ajax 3-0 in Group A to secure a place in the knockouts with one match remaining. Napoli has already entered the last 16 from this group. Tottenham and Sporting Lisbon were tied 1-1 in Group D. Harry Kane hit the ball into the goal a few seconds before the end of the match and Tonham thought they had won but Kane was adjudged off-side after taking the help of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
Tottenham coach Antonio Conte then expressed his displeasure, for which he was shown a red card. The final round of this group will take place next week and all four teams have a chance to make it to the knockouts. Top-ranked Tottenham will take on last-placed Marseille next Tuesday. Eintracht Frankfurt, which beat Marseille 2-1 on Wednesday, will now play Sporting. Barcelona’s hopes of a knockout spot, however, were dashed when Inter Milan beat Viktoria Pelzen 4-0.
