BCCI AGM: Roger Binny will be the new chairman of the board, will be announced after the meeting

Mumbai Former India cricketer Roger Binny will replace former captain Sourav Ganguly as the chairman of the board at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to be held here on Tuesday, in which the post of ICC chairman will also be discussed. Elections for future office bearers are a mere formality as all are set to be elected unopposed, but members will discuss whether BCCI should field a candidate for the post of ICC chairman or support current chairman Greg Barkley for a second term .
The last date for nominations for the top ICC post is October 20. The ICC Board will meet in Melbourne from November 11 to 13. There was a lot of discussion not only in sports but also in political circles about Ganguly’s departure from BCCI and now it will be interesting to see whether this former captain’s name is considered for the top post of ICC or not. Other names being discussed include Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and former BCCI President N Srinivasan.
Srinivasan is eligible to contest the election but it remains to be seen whether BCCI extends its support to him considering his age. Srinivasan age is 78 years. Thakur is likely to be busy during the ICC Board meeting as Assembly elections are due in Himachal Pradesh on November 12. Binny will replace Ganguly as the board president at the BCCI AGM while the former India captain is set to return to the Cricket Association of Bengal as president.
Other BCCI office-bearers who will be unanimously elected include Secretary Jay Shah, Ashish Shelar (Treasurer), Rajeev Shukla (Vice President) and Devjit Saikia (Joint Secretary). Outgoing treasurer Arun Dhumal will be the new chairman of the IPL. A senior BCCI official told PTI on the condition of anonymity that it is almost certain that Jay will represent India at the ICC board meeting but the members will have to decide whether we want someone to become the ICC chairman or New Zealand’s Greg Barkley. Let him complete the second term.
As per the agenda of the AGM, two representatives of the Cricketers’ Association of India will be inducted into the BCCI Apex Council, replacing Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy. Dhumal will chair the meeting of the newly constituted IPL Governing Council after the BCCI AGM on Tuesday. In this, the date of IPL auction will be decided and there will also be a discussion about the first women’s IPL, which the board wants to organize in March before the IPL. There will also be a discussion about tax exemption for next year’s ODI World Cup in India. If the central government does not give exemption from taxes to the ICC for this tournament to be held in India, then BCCI may suffer a loss of Rs 955 crore.
