BCCI may be named to head ICC’s finance and business affairs committee

A representative of the Board of Cricket in India (BCCI) joining the board of the International Cricket Council (ICC) may be made the head of the finance and business affairs committee of the global cricket body. BCCI has not made any official announcement yet. Secretary Jay Shah is likely to become the Indian representative on the ICC board. Shah, however, may also send Roger Binny to the board and in that case he will continue to be part of the chief executives’ committee.

The Finance and Business Affairs Committee is the most important of all the sub-committees of the ICC and there was no BCCI representative for many years before former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly became a part of it. An ICC source with knowledge of the matter told PTI, “If Jay represents the BCCI on the ICC board, he will automatically be part of the finance and business affairs committee. But India has not become the head of the finance and business affairs committee for a long time and now it is the BCCI’s turn to head the committee.

Shah will reach Melbourne in the next few days for the ICC’s annual board meeting. Newly appointed BCCI president Roger Binny and IPL chairman Arun Dhumal are also expected to reach Australia to watch the T20 World Cup. It will be interesting to see who will represent India in the ICC Chief Executives’ meeting. The convention has been that the Board President is part of the ICC Board while the Secretary takes part in the Chief Executives’ Committee meeting.

The Finance and Business Affairs Committee decides on the annual budget of the ICC. The same committee decides on the revenue sharing model, sponsorship and various rights agreements in a fixed cycle. As far as the chairman’s post is concerned, outgoing New Zealand chairman Greg Barkley is a strong contender for another term but another candidate has filed his nomination. Members have kept quiet about the other candidate but it is understood that he could be either the Zimbabwe Cricket Board chief Tewengwa Mukhulani or Singapore’s Imran Khawaja. Ganguly may continue in the ICC Cricket Committee as it is a three-year term.
