Before the IPL, Mumbai Indians coach Mark Boucher gave a statement regarding the workload, said- Workload should not be talked about in T20
Mumbai Mumbai Indians head coach Mark Boucher feels the ongoing conversation around workload management in T20 cricket is overrated when compared to the other two formats of the game which are more taxing on the body. Speaking at a media session here on Wednesday ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL), starting on Friday, Boucher said he does not think there is a need for workload management in the shortest format.
The BCCI, however, will keep an eye on the workload of the Indian players during the IPL with the ODI World Cup to be held later this year at home. Boucher said, “It is surprising that we are talking about workload management in T20 cricket. Maybe 10 or 15 years back, we didn’t talk like this. There is a science behind workload management. We have coaches and people who inform us about these things.
The former South African wicketkeeper said, “There is a lot of talk about workload management but if you look at our schedule of matches, there is a lot of time to rest between two matches. We can try and look after every player and I don’t think workload is going to be a major issue for us throughout the IPL. The former veteran said, “Test cricket and ODI cricket are more difficult on the body, T20 cricket is shorter. I am saying with all due respect that we should not talk about workload in T20 cricket.
Boucher took this opportunity to defend Suryakumar Yadav, who failed to open the account in the three matches of the ODI series against Australia. Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed on the first ball in all the three matches against Australia. Boucher said, “Surya is fine. You cannot judge a player’s form on the basis of how he is playing the first ball. I have talked to him. I asked him how he was feeling, and he said, ‘Coach I’m hitting the ball really well’. I said, ‘Good’.
He said, “If a player fails to play the first ball, then you cannot say that the player is not in form. Unfortunately, he has not been able to do so in the last three matches. Hopefully, when he faces the first ball in the IPL, the crowd will cheer him on.
