Big news for the football world, Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ ball ready for auction

A former World Cup referee is about to capitalize on his biggest mistake in the football world to get rich. The ball with which Diego Maradona famously scored the ‘Hand of God’ goal against England in the 1986 World Cup has been put up for auction by the Tunisia referee. The referee was conducting that match and he missed seeing Maradona scoring with his hand.

Former referee Ali Bin Nasser is the owner of this 36-year-old ball, which he is now going to auction. Auctioneer Graham Budd Auctions said on Thursday that it expects the historic ball to fetch anywhere from $2.7 million to $3.3 million at auction. The ball will be auctioned in the UK on November 16, four days before the World Cup in Qatar. Maradona’s other belongings related to that match were also auctioned in the past, which made big money.

The shirt that Maradona wore in that match was auctioned in May. That shirt was sold for $93 million. Maradona jumped to score with a header in that match but he scored with his hand instead of the head. Referee Bin Nasser gave him the goal. England players opposed him but the referee did not budge with his decision. Maradona later named it ‘Hand of God’. Since then the ball is safe with referee Bin Nasser. Argentina won the match 2–1 and later won the World Cup. It was from this tournament that Maradona was rated among the greatest players in the world.

Maradona died in 2020 at the age of 60. Bin Nasser said in a statement, “This ball is part of the history of international football. I think this is the right time to share it with the world.’ Bin Nasser will also auction the shirt he wore during that quarter-final match. Bin Nasir is sure to become rich by auctioning these items.
