Billie Jean King Cup: Britain, Australia reach semi-finals

Britain defeated Spain 3–0 to enter the semi-finals of the Billie Jean King Cup women’s tennis tournament. In this top-tier team tournament of women’s tennis, Britain has made it to the last four for the first time in 41 years. Australia also entered the last four in Glasgow on Thursday. But in Group C, Britain made a spectacular comeback and won. For Britain, the pair of Alicia Barnett and Olivia Nichols registered a 7-6, 6-2 win over Aliona Bolsova and Rebecca Masarova.

Earlier, Heather Watson and Harriet Dart defeated their higher-ranked rivals. Dart won 6-3 6-4 over 13th-ranked Paula Badosa while the ranking gap between the two is 85 places. In the opening match, Watson won 6-0 6-2 over Nuria Parijas Diaz.

Earlier, Australia defeated Belgium 3-0 to become the first team to reach the semi-finals. For that, Storm Sanders beat Alisson Van Utwank 6-2 6-2 while Ajila Tomljakovic won after her rival Ellyse Mertens retired from a shoulder injury. Australia also won the doubles match.
