Boxer Nupur Sheoran is carrying forward the legacy of Dada Hawa Singh

Born into a family of famous boxers, Nupur Sheoran was not particularly fond of boxing in her early years and preferred to play with puppies instead. But a defeat in a university tournament changed the course of her life as she finally wanted to pursue a career in the sport once dominated by her great-grandfather, Captain Hawa Singh. Late Hawa Singh dominated Asia from the 1960s to the early 1970s. Nupur is now carrying forward his legacy in the ring.

Every time Nupur steps into the ring, she is burdened with expectations as she is the third generation boxer in her family. His father Sanjay Kumar has also been a multiple time national champion. “Pressure goes hand in hand,” said Nupur, who is competing in the over 81kg category at the ongoing World Women’s Boxing Championships here. Sports runs in Nupur’s blood as her mother Mukesh Rani is an Asian Championship medalist. is a basketball player. Therefore, it can be said that Nupur must have been inclined towards sports since childhood.

She grew up listening to the stories of her grandfather, a two-time Asian Games gold medalist who won 11 consecutive national heavyweight titles between 1961 and 1972. Hawa Singh was the first Indian boxer to win gold medals in two consecutive Asian Games in 1966 and 1970. Shy Nupur, however, admitted that she used to go to her father’s boxing academy only to play with the puppies.

He told PTI, “My father has an academy and there he trains poor children. I have been watching it since childhood. I was good at studies and went to the academy only to play with the puppies.” Nupur was two years old when her grandfather passed away and she has hazy memories of him. When Nupur was in school, she played her first tournament in the form of Haryana sub-junior state tournament.

She said, “I was studying in class 10 then when I played my first tournament. My first match was against the sub-junior national champion and I easily defeated him. Then I realized that boxing is very easy. It was only a few years later, after suffering her first defeat in the ring, that she realized she really wanted to be a boxer.

Nupur said, “When I got my first defeat in a tournament at the university level, I realized that I really wanted to become a boxer. I went to my father and told him my wish. The next two years were very difficult as I was very lazy and had to be scolded by my father. After this Nupur did not look back. Her next target is a medal at the World Championships, where she began her campaign in fine form by thrashing Guyana’s Abiola Jackman 5–0.
