Butler said – we have confidence because we have the best players in our team
England captain Jos Buttler on Tuesday insisted that his team doesn’t think too much about the crushing defeat against Ireland as he knows he has the confidence and the team to make a comeback in the ongoing T20 World Cup. England were under pressure after their October 26 loss to Ireland but kept their semi-final hopes alive with a 20-run win over New Zealand here on Tuesday.
Butler said after the match, “We didn’t think too much about the last poor performance (loss to Ireland), we have great players in the playing XI and in the team. We had the confidence we showed today. We have depth in our batting, I think the wicket was a bit difficult especially against spin. I think Alex Hales made a good contribution. It’s all about partnership, someday he will play a good innings and someday it will be my turn.” Butler was adjudged man of the match for his 73 off 47 balls.
The England captain said, “It is a brutal tournament. Last year, South Africa were knocked out despite winning four out of five matches. It’s a World Cup, there will be pressure and only the best teams succeed under pressure.” Butler said his decision to bat after winning the toss was the right one. “We were aiming for 160-165 runs but we managed to go beyond that. We got success batting first. In the matches against Australia, we batted first and won.
Butler said, “It was the right choice for us to bat first today. The pitch was a bit damp. Now first and foremost we need to get a win against Sri Lanka (in the next match).” New Zealand captain Kane Williamson admitted that the England team played well. Williamson said, “Credit goes to him for the way England played. They put us under pressure.”
“He scored more runs than the competitive score. We tried to close the match but credit goes to the way he bowled. “You don’t want to do that (dropping Butler’s catch), he will add to your troubles,” he said. He played a brilliant innings in the big match.
