Cabinet approves extension of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana for four months

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved the extension of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY-Phase V) for a further period of 4 months from December 2021 to March 2022. Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana National Food Security Act (NFSA) [अंत्योदय अन्न योजना और प्राथमिकता वाले परिवारों] 5 kg per person per month free of cost to all the beneficiaries covered under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The Phase-I and Phase-II of the scheme were operational from April to June, 2020 and July to November, 2020 respectively. Phase-III of the scheme was operational from May to June, 2021. Phase-IV of the scheme is currently operational for the months of July-November, 2021. ( PM Garib Kalyan Yojana)

Total cost for Phase V approx 163 LMT

The PMGKAY scheme for Phase V from December 2021 to March 2022 will have an estimated additional food subsidy of Rs.53344.52 crore. The total expenditure in case of food grains for PMGKAY Phase V is likely to be around 163 LMT. It may be recalled that in view of the economic disruptions caused by the unprecedented outbreak of COVID-19 in the country last year, the government had announced the distribution of additional free food grains (rice/wheat) in March 2020. Under the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM-GKAY) 80 crore National Food Security Act (NFSA) beneficiaries on a scale of 5 kg per month under the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM-GKAY) in addition to the regular entitlement of regular monthly NFSA food grains i.e. their ration cards.

Allotment of 600 LMT food grains to Union Territories (PM Garib Kalyan Yojana)

Till now, under PM-GKAY (Phase I to IV), the department had allocated about 600 LMT of food grains to the States/UTs, which is approximately Rs. 2.07 lakh crore in food subsidy.
