New Delhi. Suryakumar Yadav, who waited a long time to get selected in the Indian team, changed his game to attract the selectors and changed his ‘hard work’ into ‘smart work’. The 32-year-old has changed his method of practice, focused on his diet and batted more on the off-side. “I started practicing in a different way. I realized after 2018 that I need to work on my game. I started playing more shots towards the off side.” Suryakumar said, “I focused on the food and started eating less food. I did a few things that really helped me in the 2018 and 2019 home seasons. After this my body was completely changed in 2020.” Suryakumar made his international debut in March 2021 in a T20 match against England, 11 years after starting his first-class cricket career. Suryakumar realized that he was practicing without thinking at first and was getting frustrated. So he changed the way he practiced. Suryakumar said, “It took time. It took us a year and a half to figure out what things would help me and how I could move forward.

After that we both realized that we were moving in the right direction and then everything started going well. I knew what I had to do, how and how much I had to practice.” He said, before that I was only practicing and then used to get a little frustrated. Then I realized there is no quality in this kind of practice even though I have been practicing a lot. But after 2018 the quality added to my practice, food, net session and everything helped me a lot.
