Kamal Haasan supported Vetrimaran’s statement, saying, “There was no religion named Hinduism during the time of Raja Raja Cholan. At that time there were Vainavam, Shivam and Samanam. The British had coined the word Hindu. Because they didn’t know how to refer to it collectively. It’s just like he converted Thoothukudi to Tuticorin.

What did Vaitrimaran say in his statement?

Vaitrimarana, while giving his views on ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’, said, “Raja Raja Cholan was not a Hindu. Those Bharatiya Janata Party people are trying to steal our identity. They have already tried to saffronise Thiruvalluvar. We should never allow this.” His statement has been opposed by Bharatiya Janata Party leader H Raja and said that Raja Raja Chola was a Hindu king. H Raja said, “I am not well versed in history like Vaitrimaran. But let them tell about the two churches and mosques built by Raja Raja Cholan. He has called himself Shivpad Sekaran. Were they not Hindus?” Now it remains to be seen what turn this controversy takes after Kamal Haasan’s statement.

‘Ponniyin Selvan’ has earned more than 300 crores

Talking about ‘Ponniyin Selvan’, the film is based on the legendary author Kalki Krishnamurthy’s novel of the same name, of which five parts were published between 1950 and 1955. The film stars Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Karthi, Trishna Krishnan, Rahman and Prakash Raj in pivotal roles. The film, which released on 30 September, has been produced for around Rs 500 crore and has earned more than Rs 300 crore worldwide in 5 days.
