Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka has been arrested for rape in Sydney. Danushka, 31, was staying with the team after being ruled out of the tournament due to a hamstring injury. Gunathilaka was arrested from the Sydney team hotel in the early hours of Sunday following a police investigation.

Danushka Gunathilaka met a woman after chatting for several days through an online dating application. According to media reports, the woman has alleged that he raped her on the evening of November 2. The report said that following the complaint, “sex crime squad officers investigated the crime scene at an address in Rose Bay.” After investigation, the 31-year-old was arrested from a hotel off Sussex Street at 1 pm. He is then taken into custody at the police station and charged with rape. The local court has refused to grant bail in this case.

It has been confirmed by the Sri Lanka Cricket Board that their player Danushka Gunathilaka has been arrested by Sydney Police in connection with the rape. Significantly, the Sri Lankan team was knocked out of the tournament after losing to England on Sunday. Gunatilka played against Namibia in the first round and was dismissed without opening an account. After this he was ruled out of the tournament due to injury. The Sri Lankan team qualified for the Super 12 stage but finished fourth in Group I.
