Don’t have to worry about money due to TOPS, Khelo India program: Nikhat

India’s star boxer Nikhat Zareen believes that the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and Khelo India program have brought a lot of change and now players can focus on their sport without worrying about money. TOPS and Khelo India programs were launched by the central government in 2014 and 2018 respectively. The government finances the players under both these schemes. Speaking at a national conference on completing 100 episodes of Mann Ki Baat, Nikhat said, “When we play for India, we have to spend our money but TOPS changed everything. Now we can focus on our game and winning medals.

He said, “When I started boxing, there were not many competitions. A sportsperson is most in need of financial support which Khelo India got. The Prime Minister has helped sportspersons a lot through this scheme and women have broken many national records in Khelo India.” Nikhat said, “It is inspiring and encouraging for women to participate in sports.” Said, “Only a player can understand when he is going through a bad phase. When I was injured and could not play for a year, people used to taunt that her career is over but I came back. Modiji not only congratulates us on winning but also encourages us to compete. Rio Paralympics silver medalist Deepa Malik recalled her conversation with Prime Minister Modi in ‘Chai Pe Charcha’ and how Modi insisted on the use of the word ‘divyang’. He said, “He proposed the use of the word Divyang for us in 2015. There was a lot of debate on social media but he said that focus on ability rather than disability.
