Doubt over Shreyas Iyer’s playing in ODI series between Ind vs Aus, may be out for this reason
Ahmedabad. The injury management of players by the Indian team and the National Cricket Academy (NCA) has once again come under the scanner after Shreyas Iyer’s groin injury resurfaced. India’s middle-order batsman Iyer did not come out to bat on Sunday, the fourth day of the fourth and final cricket Test against Australia. Iyer is likely to miss the three-match ODI series against Australia starting March 17 in Mumbai.
The World Cup is the most important tournament this year and Iyer also has to captain the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. In such a situation, he is likely to be given rest. Iyer missed the first Test of the series in Nagpur due to a groin problem, after which he returned to the team for the second match in Delhi. However, the question is now being raised that the NCA once again allowed a player who was not fully fit to play. It is learned that Iyer felt uncomfortable on Saturday following which Ravindra Jadeja was sent in to bat at number five. Iyer didn’t even come to the ground on Sunday as he was in no condition to bat.
A former national selector told PTI on condition of anonymity, “It could be a case of injury arising from Australia fielding around 170 overs during their innings. But I do not understand why the mandatory rule of playing at least one domestic match was not applied to Iyer. Iyer did not play in the Nagpur Test but was declared fit for the second Test. He played in both the Delhi and Indore Tests but his body could not handle fielding for long periods in Ahmedabad.
When Iyer first suffered a groin problem in January, he was out for a month and underwent rigorous rehabilitation at the NCA before the Ranji season was over before he was declared fit. The former selector said, “But the Irani Cup was to happen and you could have waited for Iyer to come back. Let him play in Irani Kam in similar weather and see if his body can handle fielding for two days in humid conditions.
