Ethiopia’s Lemi, Haymanot set course records at Mumbai Marathon

Ethiopia’s Haile Lemi and Anchlem Haymanot won the $45,000 prize money and $15,000 bonus after setting new course records in the men’s and women’s sections respectively at the Mumbai Marathon here on Sunday. Olympian Gopi T finished on top among domestic elite marathon runners with a timing of 2:16:41. Gopi, the first Indian man to win the Asian Marathon Championship in 2017, finished 10th overall. After him, Man Singh was 17 seconds behind him and then Kalidas Hirawe came in third among Indians.

55,000 people turned up for the 18th edition of the World Athletics gold-level road race in which Indian women’s Chhavi Yadav (2:50:35) registered a stunning win on her marathon debut. Lamy took the first place in the men’s race in 2:07:32. Philemon Rono (2:08:44) of Kenya was second and Helu Jevdu (2:10:32) of Ethiopia was third. For the first time in the women’s section, the players on the podium were able to take less than 2:25:00 seconds. Hemanot took the first position in 2:24:15. She was followed by Tusa (2:24:22), bettering the previous course record of 2:24:33 held by Kenya’s Valentin Kipketer since 2013.
