Al Khor. The United States again denied England a win at the FIFA World Cup on Saturday, playing out a 0-0 draw. Having justified their favorites status with a massive 6-2 win over Iran in their opener in Qatar, England still await their first win against the United States. England supporters were very disappointed with the draw and were ‘hooting’ at the ground. Three times the two teams have faced each other on this big stage of football and each time the American team has disappointed the football fans of England.
England coach Gareth Southgate reminded his players of the United States’ record of a 1-0 win in 1950 and a 1-1 draw in 2010. But the players could not muster a spirited performance against a young and energetic team led by Greg Berhalter. England captain and 2018 World Cup ‘Golden Boot’ winner Harry Kane had a lackluster performance in the match and came close to scoring with a header in ‘stoppage-time’ but failed.
He has not been able to score a single goal in this tournament so far. He said that it was definitely not the best performance. We had two or three chances but we could not score. England are on top of Group B with four points while USA are third with two points. The US continued their impressive performance from their first match against Wales. England can consider themselves fortunate that in the first half, Christian Pulisic’s left-footed shot hit the crossbar and Weston McKinney’s shot went wide.
The Al Bayt Stadium was packed with England fans hoping a win would put their side through to the knockout stages with one match to spare. Southgate said: “I want to put smiles on the faces of our fans, but we have failed to achieve that.” The US team will now face Iran on Tuesday and coach Berhalter will be eyeing a spot in the Round of 16. In another Group B match, Iran beat Wales 2-0 to take three points, one point above the United States.
