FIFA World Cup 2022: Brazil beat Serbia with Richarlison’s two goals, Neymar injured

Brazil opened their FIFA World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over Serbia but their star striker Neymar was injured in the match. Richarlison scored both these goals for Brazil. He opened the team’s account in the 62nd minute of the match from a chance created by Vinicius Junior and doubled the team’s lead 11 minutes later with a spectacular acrobatic kick. The Tottenham striker came to know about Neymar’s injury after the match. He said, “The most important thing for us is that he is 100 percent fit for the next match. I will see how he is when I reach the hotel.

Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lassmar said Neymar had sprained his right ankle. He, however, did not say whether he would be available to play in the team’s next match against Switzerland on Monday. He said, “We have used ice on his painful area on the bench in the dugout and then during physiotherapy. The seriousness of the injury is not yet known. He will be under observation. Neymar was also injured in the 2014 World Cup. In this World Cup played in Brazil, he was ruled out of the tournament due to back pain in the quarter-finals against Colombia. Brazil was then defeated 7–1 by Germany in the semi-finals.

Neymar was fouled nine times in the match against Serbia, four more than any other player at this year’s World Cup. Serbia’s defense could not stop Richarlison due to the increased focus on Neymar. The Brazilian team also created many chances in the first half of the match, but the team did not get success. In the 62nd minute, Neymar broke through the opposition’s defense to pass the ball to Vinicius, who passed it to Richarlison, and the player, playing in his World Cup debut, made no mistake to beat the goalkeeper. Richarlison said, “My childhood dream came true. We knew it would be difficult to overcome them. I am used to playing against such defensive teams in England. I wanted to take advantage of the opportunities that I had and I did just that.

Neymar suffered from difficult situations at times in the match and sprained his right ankle in the second half. He was seen crying on the bench after being substituted in the 79th minute of the match. After this he came out of the stadium limping. Brazil coach Tite started with four forwards, adopting an attacking approach for the match. It featured Rafinha alongside Neymar, Vinicius and Richarlison. The Serbian players, however, were not allowing Brazil to create many chances in the beginning. Neymar tried to control the pace of the game but was constantly surrounded by Serbian players. During this, he, Vinicius and Rafinha missed some chances to score in the first half itself.

Brazil squandered an opportunity to take the lead in the 60th minute when Alex Sandro’s shot hit the post after tricking the goalkeeper. Earlier, Neymar missed a free kick in the 50th minute and a goal from near the penalty area in the 55th minute. Several Serbian players were also injured during the match. Serbia coach Dragan Stankovic said, “We have three key players injured.
