Asian Championships: Jeremy won silver in snatch, failed in clean and jerk

Indian weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga won a silver medal in men’s snatch in the 67kg category at the Asian Weightlifting Championships here on Sunday, but failed in all three attempts at clean and jerk to finish short of the total. Jeremy, competing in his first tournament after the 2022 Commonwealth Games, was the only one among 12 lifters not to finish his event. His weight category, however, is not part of the Olympics. Jeremy equaled his personal best in snatch with a lift of 141 kg and won the silver medal. He failed to lift 165 kg in his first two attempts in the clean and jerk.

The 20-year-old Jeremy, the reigning Youth Olympic champion, raised the weight to 168kg in his third attempt but failed to lift it as well. This weight was two kg more than his best performance. Jeremy was only successful twice in six snatch and clean and jerk attempts. The Mizoram player, who missed last year’s World Championships due to a thigh injury, showed haste in the beginning. He could not lift 137 kg in his first attempt in snatch but successfully lifted the same weight in his next attempt.

After this, in the third attempt, he lifted 141 kg and secured the second position in this category. However, the disappointment on his face could be clearly seen at the medal distribution ceremony as he could not make it to the total. China’s He Yu won the gold with a lift of 320 kg (147 kg + 173 kg), while Korea’s Lee Sangyon lifted 314 kg (139 kg + 175 kg) and Uzbekistan’s Ergashev Adhkhamjon lifted 312 kg (138 kg + 174 kg). They won silver and bronze medals respectively. Bindayarani Devi opened India’s account on Saturday by winning a silver medal in the women’s 55kg category.
