Man Singh and Jyoti Gawte became the winners of men and women of Delhi Marathon

Man Singh produced a career-best performance to win the New Delhi Marathon, while Jyoti Gawte defended her title in the women’s section here on Sunday. Man Singh won the highly competitive men’s race with a timing of 2:14:13. His previous best was 2:16:58. The 33-year-old sprinter received a check of Rs 1.5 lakh as the award.

Belliappa AB and Karthik Kumar finished second and third in the 42.195 kilometer course with timings of 2h 14m 15s and 2h 14m 19s respectively. The top three runners-up clocked less than two hours and 15 minutes in the qualification set by the Athletics Federation of India for the Hangzhou Asian Games. Securing the qualification time, however, will not guarantee a ticket to the Asian Games.

This was the entry standard cut-off for selection and the AFI would decide the team after taking into account a number of factors, including medal chances. The bronze winner at the last Asian Games (2018) clocked 2:18:48 and the Indian trio’s time on Sunday was much better. In the women’s section, Jyoti, however, fell short of the Asian Games qualification standard (2:37:00). He won the race with a timing of 2 hours 53 minutes and 4 seconds.

Ashwini Jadhav (2:53:6) and Jigmet Dolma (2:56:41) won the silver and bronze respectively. More than 16000 runners participated in the marathon in four categories, making it the biggest marathon in the country. The elite marathon runners were flagged off at 5.00 am by Kenyan sprinter David Rudisha along with other dignitaries.
