Gulveer Singh wins gold in 10,000m, qualifies for Asian Championships

Uttar Pradesh’s Gulveer Singh qualified for the upcoming Asian Athletics Championships by winning the men’s 10,000m gold on the opening day of the Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships here on Monday. The Asian Athletics Championships will be held in Bangkok from July 12 to 16. Gulveer won the race in 29:5.90, which was better than the qualifying time of 29:30 for the Asian Championships. Gujarat’s international sprinter Murli Kumar Gavit finished 11th among 35 athletes.

He clocked 29:27.76. A total of 45 athletes took part in this event, out of which 10 could not finish the race. The women’s 10,000m was won by Maharashtra’s Sanjivani Jadhav with a timing of 33:32.73, almost 30 seconds faster than the Asian qualifying time of 33 minutes. Only five athletes took part in this race, out of which four finished the race. Uttar Pradesh’s Tanya Chowdhary won the gold medal in women’s hammer throw with a throw of 60.54m but she fell short of the Asian Championships qualifying standard of 62.03m.

Uttar Pradesh’s international player Sarita R Singh got the second position and Punjabi Manpreet Kaur got the third position. In the men’s 1500m heats, Haryana’s Aman clocked 3:46.04, bettering the Asian qualifying time of 3:47.84. Tamil Nadu’s Rajesh Ramesh clocked 46.13 seconds in the men’s 400m final to better the Asian Championships qualifying mark of 46.17 seconds. In the women’s 400m heats, two athletes Aishwarya Mishra of Maharashtra and R Vidya Ramaraj of Tamil Nadu clocked better than their Asian qualification times.
