Injured Rahul and Unadkat included in WTC final team

Lucknow Super Giants captain Lokesh Rahul and his team’s experienced left-arm fast bowler Jaydev Unadak have suffered serious back injuries that could put them in doubt for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at The Oval from June 7 to 11. Indian senior team’s wicket-keeper batsman Rahul suffered a hamstring injury on his right leg during the IPL match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday. A day before the match, his team-mate Unadkat had slipped badly while bowling in the nets, putting all his weight on his left shoulder.

He looked in a lot of pain and the team physio was seen applying ice to his injury. It is not yet known whether he has dislocated his shoulder and will require rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy. Rahul was taken off the field with the help of the team physio and a fellow player. He could not even walk and for some time he lay down on the ground in pain. He was hurt on the last ball of the second over when Faf du Plessis played Marcus Stoinis’ ball at extra cover. The seriousness of the injury of both is yet to be ascertained.

If Rahul has a grade one or two thigh injury, he could be out for six to eight weeks and in that case, Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid will have to make a decision based on the team’s needs. The Indian team has not submitted its official list of standby players for the WTV Finals. Kona Bharat is always the first choice wicketkeeper, not Rahul. India can strengthen the batting by bringing in Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored a double century and a century in the Irani Cup.

The other top-order option is Abhimanyu Easwaran, while Ishan Kishan, who was dropped due to Rahul’s presence in the 15-man squad, could also be considered. If Unadkat dislocates his shoulder, he could be out for two months and the only viable left-arm pacer option for the team management is Arshdeep Singh, who is set to play for English county Kent after the IPL gets over.
