Pune | Sharad Pawar Babri Masjid Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar has said that he was not ready to come back from the Center as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra during the post-Babri Masjid demolition riots. He was emotionally prepared for this, he said that I did not want me to become CM in these circumstances. Pawar said that in 1993, he was asked to take over the reins of state power. Pawar, then a Congress leader, was Defense Minister in Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao’s cabinet and took over as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra in March 1993, replacing Sudhakarrao Naik.
I was told to go and take office
Sharad Pawar Babri Masjid Pawar said that after the demolition of Babri Masjid, riots broke out across the country. Normal life collapsed in Mumbai for 14-15 days. I was the Defense Minister in PV Narasimha Rao’s government. I was told to go to Mumbai and take over as Chief Minister. The veteran politician was speaking at an event in Pune organized by Marathi daily Loksatta, whose editor Girish Kuber interviewed him on the occasion. The former Union minister said that initially he was unwilling to take charge of the state and went back to Delhi but eventually returned to take charge as the chief minister.

It was a very emotional decision for me
Sharad Pawar Babri Masjid Mr. Pawar said that the reason for his coming back again was that riots had broken out in the metropolis. Pawar, a multiple-time chief minister, said it was an emotional decision for him to come back to his home state and take over the reins of power once again. He said that I was emotionally persuaded for this responsibility that the state where I was born and brought up and from where I came here (Delhi) is burning and in such a situation if you (Pawar) will not take the responsibility. so it will hurt them
