Ignored for Australia series, Sarfaraz scores century again

Sarfaraz Khan put behind him the disappointment of not being picked in the Indian team for the Australia series despite scoring runs consistently, hitting a century for Mumbai against Delhi in their Ranji Trophy Group B match here on Tuesday. This is the third hundred of the Ranji Trophy season for the young Mumbai batsman as he tries to grab the attention of the selectors. The Mumbai team was dismissed for 293 runs in the first innings just before the end of the first day’s play. The highlight of his innings was Sarfaraz Khan’s 125.

Sarfaraz was not selected in the squad for the first two matches of the four-Test series against Australia. He scored this century at a time when his team was in dire need of it. After being invited to bat first in Mumbai, he lost his top four wickets for 66 runs. These included the wickets of Prithvi Shaw (40) and captain Ajinkya Rahane (two), who scored a triple century in the last match. Sarfaraz played a responsible inning in such a situation. He shared a 144-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Shams Mulani (39).

Pranshu Vijayaran was the most successful bowler from Delhi. He took four wickets for 66 runs. In other Group B matches, Andhra posted 256 for five against Saurashtra on the opening day in Rajkot. Ricky Bhui scored 80 runs for Andhra while Dharmendra Singh Jadeja took three wickets for 80 runs from Saurashtra. In Chennai, Tamil Nadu scored 386 for four on the first day against Assam with the help of a century from Narayanan Jagadeesan (125).
