Indian team will try to repeat ODI performance in T20 against New Zealand

High on confidence after a clean sweep in the ODI series, India will look to continue their winning streak against New Zealand in a three-match T20 International series starting here on Friday before facing Australia in the Test series. The ODI World Cup is to be held this year and in such a situation the Indian team has to play more ODIs but from this series against New Zealand, it will try to carry out its initial preparations for next year’s T20 World Cup.

India’s T20 team has been revamped under the leadership of Hardik Pandya, in which many top players have not found place. This team had recently defeated Sri Lanka 2-1. With regular skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami missing from the squad, India’s defense will depend on the likes of Hardik Pandya, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan and Kuldeep Yadav. These players will then attend a camp in Nagpur on February 2 to prepare for the Test series.

Prithvi Shaw has returned to the T20 team after performing well in domestic cricket. He scored a record 379 runs in a Ranji Trophy match against Assam. The 23-year-old played his last T20 International in July 2021 and it will be interesting to see whether Hardik gives him a chance or goes ahead with the opening pair of Gill and Kishan. Gill is currently running in excellent form. He has been particularly impressive in ODIs, scoring three centuries in the last four innings, including a career-high 208 in an innings.

This opener from Punjab will try to maintain this form in T20 also. Suryakumar did not do well in the ODI series against New Zealand but when it comes to T20, he has become the most dangerous batsman. He would like to make up for the ODI failure in T20 matches. India’s batting looks strong but they need to focus on the bowling department. Left-arm fast bowler Arshdeep Singh, who returned from injury, did not do well in the series against Sri Lanka.

He gave away 37 runs in two overs in Pune. India had lost this match. Young fast bowler Shivam Mavi, however, did well on his debut and took four wickets for 22 runs. He can make a dangerous pair with Umran Malik. In the last ODI, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal got a chance to play together after a long time, but in T20 only one of them is likely to get a place in the playing XI.

Chahal has been preferred in this shorter format and in the absence of Akshar Patel, the performance of this leg-spinner will also matter a lot. India had trounced New Zealand in the ODI series but the Kiwis, led by Mitchell Santner, would look to make a comeback in the T20s. Left-handed batsman Devon Conway showed his form with a 138 in the final ODI while Michael Bracewell continued to perform well. They will try to maintain this form in T20 as well.

Team India: Hardik Pandya (captain), Suryakumar Yadav (vice-captain), Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Shubman Gill, Prithvi Shaw, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Jitesh Sharma (wicketkeeper), Washington Sundar , Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik, Shivam Mavi and Mukesh Kumar.
