Guptill and Boult out of New Zealand squad for series against India

Veteran Martin Guptill and Trent Boult have been dropped from the New Zealand squad for the limited-overs series against India starting November 18. Opener Guptill has been dropped to make room for rising star Finn Allen while Boult, who has opted out of the board’s central contract, will be replaced in the six-match series.

Allen has been given a place in both the T20 and ODI teams. He has so far scored five half-centuries and one century in 23 T20Is and eight ODIs. In Boult’s absence, the pace attack will be handled by Tim Southee, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Blair Tickner and Adam Milne. Milne last played ODI in 2017. Head coach Gary Stead said it was not easy to drop Boult and Guptill but the team has to look forward.

He said, “When Trent decided to leave New Zealand Cricket in August, we had indicated that priority would be given to the contracted players. We have to look ahead and others also need to be given a chance. “With the World Cup less than a year away, the Finn needs to be given experience, especially against a strong team like India,” Stead said.

Kane Williamson will be the captain in both the formats. Series schedule: 18 November: 1st T20, Wellington 20 November, 2nd T20, Tauranga 22 November, 3rd T20, Napier 25 November, 1st ODI, Auckland 27 November, 2nd ODI, Hamilton 30 November, 3rd ODI, Christchurch.
