India beat Wales, will face New Zealand in ‘cross-over’ to reach quarter-finals

India beat Wales 4-2 to finish second in Pool D to qualify for the cross-over match where they will face New Zealand for a place in the quarter-finals of the FIH Hockey World Cup, here on Thursday. India took a 2-0 lead through Shamsher Singh (21st minute) and Akashdeep Singh (32nd minute) but Wales surprised the home team by scoring twice in two minutes.

Both Wales goals came from penalty corners, with Gareth Furlong (42nd minute) and Jacob Draper (44th minute) netting their side’s 2-2 draw. Akashdeep saved India with a brilliant field goal in the 45th minute and then skipper Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner in the 59th minute. Both India and England have seven points from three matches. But England finished on top of Pool D thanks to a better goal difference. England beat Spain 4–0 in their Pool D match. England qualified directly for the quarter-finals by topping the pool, while India and Spain will play ‘cross-over’ matches for the other four quarter-final spots.
