India scored 306 runs for seven wickets, Iyer, Dhawan and Gill scored half-centuries

Shreyas Iyer (80), captain Shikhar Dhawan (72) and Shubman Gill (50) scored half-centuries as India scored 306 for seven in the opening match of the three-match series here on Friday. Washington Sundar’s unbeaten aggressive innings of 37 runs in 16 balls in the last over took the team’s score beyond 300. During this, he hit three fours and as many sixes. While Iyer hit four fours and four sixes in his 76-ball innings, Dhawan hit 13 fours in 77 balls. He shared a 124-run partnership for the first wicket with Gill.

Gill hit one four and three sixes in his 65-ball innings. Lockie Ferguson (59 runs in 10 overs) and Tim Southee (73 runs in 10 overs) took three wickets each for New Zealand. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and decided to bowl first and the team’s bowlers prevented India from getting off to a fast start. Dhawan and Gill batted well in the initial overs, which resulted in the team scoring 40 runs after 10 overs. Meanwhile, Ferguson dropped Gill’s catch off Match Henry. Dhawan and Gill then accelerated the run pace and sent the ball across the boundary line at regular intervals. During this, Dhawan hit two consecutive fours against Matt Henry in the 15th over. He then hit two fours against Adam Milne, including a brilliant uppercut to bring up his century in the 21st over.

Dhawan then hit two fours against Saudi while Gill completed his half-century by sending Mitchell Santner’s ball to the visitors. However, he could not take his innings much further and was caught by Devon Conway off Ferguson in the 23rd over. In the next over, Southee gave a double blow to the team for the same score by walking Dhawan. Good starts by the openers had set the stage for the middle order. Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant were at the crease. When Pant opened the account with a four off Southee’s ball, Iyer hit an uppercut against Ferguson. Wicketkeeper Tom Latham gave life to Iyer off Milne’s ball to Iyer, while the same Pant played Ferguson’s ball on the wicket after hitting a four in the 33rd over.

Suryakumar Yadav’s bat, which was running in excellent rhythm, did not work this time. This player, who opened the account with a four on the cover drive, returned to the pavilion by catching Allen standing in the slip off Ferguson’s ball. With this setback, India’s score was 160 for four after 33 overs. Iyer got good support from Sanju Samson (36) here and both shared a 94-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Samson once again missed the half-century but he hit many good shots in his 38-ball innings. During this period, Iyer became only the second batsman in New Zealand to score four consecutive innings of more than 50 runs. Earlier only Rameez Raja has done this in New Zealand.
