Indian challenge ends in quarter-finals of Amches Rapid Chess Tournament
The Indian challenge in the Amches Rapid online chess tournament ended in the quarter-finals with the defeat of D Gukesh, Arjun Arigesi and Vidit Santosh Gujrathi. Gukesh, who had defeated world champion Magnus Carlsen in the opening stage, lost 1.5–2.5 to Richard Repert. In the four-game match, Gukesh took the lead by winning the second game but could not maintain the momentum. With a win in 32 moves in the second game, 16-year-old Gukesh took a 1.5-0.5 lead while the first was a draw.

Repert then came back to level the score by winning the third game in 55 moves and then won the fourth game to win the match. Arigessi, who was one of the players to beat Colerson in the opening round, lost 0.5-2.5 in the quarter-finals to the world number one. Despite being on the verge of defeat in the first game, Carlsen, who managed to draw the game, played as expected in the next two games, winning and reaching the semi-finals.
Vidit also lost 0.5-2.5 in a one-sided match against Poland’s Yan Christoph Duda. Gukesh and Arigasi had finished second and fourth respectively in the opening round. The Amches Rapid Tournament is part of the Meltwater Champions Tour and a total of 16 players, including five from India, are taking part.
