What is happening in Ukraine will affect Indo-Pacific region: European Commission chief
New Delhi. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Monday that Europe would ensure that Russia’s “unprovoked and unreasonable” attack against Ukraine proves to be a “strategic failure”. He said the world’s reaction to this would decide the future of the international order and the global economy. In his address at the Raisina Dialogue in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leyen also said that what is happening in Ukraine will have an impact on the Indo-Pacific region. Leyen said the outcome of Russia’s war against Ukraine would not only determine the future of Europe, but would greatly affect the Indo-Pacific region and the rest of the world.
He said that as important as it is for the Indo-Pacific region, it is equally important for Europe to respect borders and reject the tendency to dominate. Leyen said, “What is happening in Ukraine will have an impact on the Indo-Pacific region. it is already. Countries that have been battered for two years by the COVID-19 pandemic will now have to deal with rising prices of grain, energy and fertilizers as a direct result of the war of (Vladimir) Putin’s choice.” Criticizing Moscow on the War on Ukraine He said the pictures of the Eastern European country have shocked the whole world and the fundamental principles underpinning peace and security around the world are at stake in Asia as well as Europe. “In Europe, we see a Russian attack as a direct threat to our security,” he said. We will ensure that the unprovoked and unreasonable aggression against Ukraine proves to be a strategic failure.
Leyen said the world’s reaction to this would determine the future of the international order and the global economy. The president of the European Commission also referred to the “no borders” friendship between Russia and China. “Russia and China have made an ‘uncontrolled agreement’. They have declared that friendship between them knows no bounds.” Activating partnerships with is a ‘priority’ of the bloc in this decade.
