IPL 2023: Virat Kohli broke silence on leaving the captaincy of RCB, said – I did not have much faith in myself

Indian team’s veteran batsman Virat Kohli had decided to step down as the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season. However, he did not give any major reason for his decision. But now after two years, he has broken his silence on his decision to quit the captaincy. Kohli candidly said that he had lost ‘confidence’ in himself and his ‘passion’ for the job had also waned. In fact, Kohli was talking to the players of the RCB women’s team before the match against UP Warriors in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) on Wednesday. During this he said this.

Kohli said that at the time when my captaincy tenure was coming to an end, to be honest, I did not have much confidence in myself. There was no emotion left in me about it. Along with this, he said that as a person, I was telling myself that I have faced a lot of ups and downs, now I cannot handle it anymore. RCB had a dreadful time in 2019 as they lost six matches in a row and finished last. They had been at the bottom two years before this as well. Kohli said that in the next season (2020), new players joined the team, they had new ideas and it was like another chance. He was very excited, personally maybe I wasn’t that excited but his positive energy got us to the playoffs three years in a row.

RCB’s team reached the IPL playoffs again in 2020 after 2016 and reached the knockouts in 2021 and 2022 as well. He said that we start every session with the same enthusiasm as before. I still feel excited. It is a collective responsibility to make the team successful, if someone lacks confidence then other players encourage him. Kohli had made up his mind to step down as India’s T20 captain after the 2021 T20 World Cup. He was later dropped from the ODI captaincy. He also relinquished the captaincy of the Test team after this. After being relieved of the captaincy burden from the Indian team, he decided to relinquish the captaincy of RCB.
