World Boxing Championships: India’s Hussamuddin in the pre-quarterfinals

Asian and Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist Mohammed Hussamuddin (57kg) continued his good form to advance to the pre-quarterfinals of the IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships here on Friday. In the last 32 match, Hussamuddin defeated Liu Ping of China. The Indian boxer dominated the opening round with his movement and powerful punches and retained it till the end to win a 5-0 unanimous decision. Hussamuddin will take on Russia’s Sevin Edward in the pre-quarterfinals on Sunday.

Asian Championships silver medalist Ashish, however, went down 2-5 on review to two-time Olympic champion Arlen Lopez of Cuba. Lopez won the first round but the Indian boxer won the next round. The final round saw a close contest but the Cuban boxer prevailed. On Friday itself, Naveen (92kg) will clash with Korea’s Jeong Jae Min. In the current tournament, 538 boxers from 107 countries including several Olympic medalists are taking part.
