Iyer may be out for a long time due to back injury

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma said here on Monday that Shreyas Iyer is not looking in good shape as he is recovering from lower back pain but did not specify when the middle-order batsman would return to competitive cricket. Iyer is doubtful to play in the IPL except for the three-match ODI series against Australia starting March 17 in which he leads the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Iyer, who was included in the playing XI against Australia, could not come out to bat during the Indian innings. When Rohit was asked about Iyer’s fitness, he said, “What happened to him is unfortunate. He had to wait through the day to bat and then when the day’s play was over, his back problem flared up again. He was sent to the hospital for a scan.

He said, “I do not know the exact report of the scan, but it seems that he is not in a good condition. That is why he is not here.” The Indian captain said that he did not know how long it would take for Iyer to become match fit again. Rohit said, “We do not know how long it will take for him to recover or when he will make a comeback. He didn’t seem to be in the best of shape when he recovered from his injury. I hope he recovers soon and starts playing again.
