India’s first innings was reduced to 438 runs, Kohli equals legendary Bradman’s 29 centuries

Making his 500th international match a memorable one, Virat Kohli hit his 29th Test century as India posted 438 in 128 overs in their first innings on the second day of the second Test against West Indies on Friday. With this, Kohli equaled Sir Don Bradman, considered the greatest batsman in cricket history, with 29 Test centuries. Kohli, who missed a century in the last Test, scored 121 runs in 206 balls. During his 76th international century (including Tests, ODIs and T20s), he made a strong comeback for India by sharing a 159-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja (61). Kohli was run out while Jadeja was caught by Joshua da Silva behind the wicket off Kemar Roach.

After lunch, Ravichandran Ashwin (56) scored a half-century and batted brilliantly with the lower-order batsmen to take the team’s score to 438 runs. He was the last batsman to be dismissed. As soon as he was out, the umpire announced a tea break. He shared 33 runs for the seventh wicket with Ishan Kishan (25) and 23 runs for the eighth wicket with Jaydev Unadkat (seven) to take the team past 400 runs. He hit eight fours in his 78-ball innings. For the West Indies, Roach took 104 and Jomel Warrican took three wickets for 89 runs. Jason Holder gave two for 57 while Shannon Gabriel took one wicket. Earlier, the first session of the day was entirely in the name of Kohli. He had no problem scoring runs against the West Indies bowlers. He hit 11 fours during his innings while scoring 77 runs.

Kohli, who started the day with 87 runs, completed his century with a four off Roach’s ball. This is Kohli’s first century on foreign soil after 2018 (against Australia in Perth). This is Kohli’s 12th century against the West Indies and he is joint second with Jacques Kallis in terms of scoring most centuries against this team. Former great player Sunil Gavaskar (13) holds the record for most centuries against the West Indies. The pitch at Queen’s Park Oval has so far been more helpful to the batsmen than in the first Test played in Dominica. Some balls were stopping and the West Indian bowlers were bowling hard against Kohli around the off-stump. Kohli showed a great understanding of the match and focused more on scoring one or two runs than playing aggressive shots.

He scored one run 45 times and two runs 13 times. He hit nine out of 11 fours on the off side. Jadeja also gave him excellent support from the other end. He completed his 19th half-century of Test career shortly after the completion of Kohli’s century. India benefited from the absence of off-spinner Rahkeem Cornwall. Left arm spinner Jomel Warrican could not get much help from the pitch despite bowling the right line length. Earlier on the opening day of the match, captain Rohit Sharma (80) and his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal (57) laid the foundation for a big score by sharing 139 runs for the first wicket.
