India’s top discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur, who impressed with her performance at the Tokyo Olympics, was on Wednesday handed a three-year ban for using the banned substance stanozolol. The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) made the announcement. The ban imposed on Kamalpreet will be effective from March 29, 2022. In May this year, he was provisionally suspended after his sample tested positive for steroids was tested positive by the AIU in Patiala on March 7.

Stanozolol is a typical anabolic steroid and according to World Athletics it is included in the list of banned substances. “The AIU has banned Kamalpreet Kaur of India for three years with effect from March 29, 2022, for the presence/use of a banned substance (Stanozolol),” the AIU said in a statement. Their results will be invalid from March 7, 2022.” Kamalpreet has refused to get his B sample tested.

The AIU said, “On 11 April 2022, the player confirmed that he would request a B sample assessment or an A sample and/or a B sample experimental documentation package (LDP) unless he was assisted with expenses.” Kamalpreet had performed brilliantly in the Tokyo Games, finishing sixth. Kamalpreet had set a national record of 65.06m before the Tokyo Games last year.

She made it to the final during the Tokyo Games after finishing second in the qualifying round where she finished seventh with a best effort of 63.70m. This was the third best performance by an Indian player in the field events at the Games. Twenty-six-year-old Kamalpreet had tested four supplements in a private laboratory and found “steroid components” in one protein supplement.

He had received approval to test a protein supplement containing stanozolol at the National Dope Testing Laboratory in New Delhi. Kamalpreet was then called and said that she was taking a protein supplement five days a week during her training days from around 10 to 15 February 2022 and she did the same for two days before dope control.

However, she could not explain from where she got these supplements. The AIU then served a notice of the allegations to the player on September 7. Kamalpreet accepted the violation as well as the proposed punishment within 20 days of receiving the notice from the AIU and his ban was reduced from four years to three years.
