Khwaja gets visa, will fly to India on Thursday

Australia opener Usman Khawaja was issued a late visa on Wednesday, preventing him from leaving for India along with his teammates. A report in ‘Sydney Morning Herald’ said that Khawaja’s passport and visa were handed over to a representative of Cricket Australia (CA) in Melbourne late on Wednesday night. Australia left for the much-anticipated four-Test series against India without Khawaja in two different contingents on Tuesday and Wednesday. Khawaja could not leave with the team.

His passport and visa were not granted by the Indian High Commission. According to the report, Khawaja is now expected to leave for India from Melbourne on Thursday. Posting a meme on social media, Khawaja wrote, “I am waiting for my Indian Visa.” Born in Pakistan, Khawaja has played 56 Tests, 40 ODIs and nine T20 Internationals for Australia. This 36-year-old batsman has participated in IPL in 2016.

Khawaja was named Australia’s Test Player of the Year on Monday. The award is named after veteran spinner Shane Warne. The Australian team will take part in a four-day training session on the outskirts of Bengaluru and then leave for Nagpur for the first Test starting on February 9. The remaining three Tests will be held in New Delhi, Dharamshala and Ahmedabad. Both the teams will try to ensure a place in the final of the World Test Championship from this series.
