Lovlina and Shiv Thapa will lead the Indian challenge in the semi-finals

Olympic bronze medalist boxers Lovlina Borgohain and Shiv Thapa will lead the Indian challenge in the semi-finals of the Asian Boxing Championships in Amman, Jordan, here on Wednesday. 12 boxers from India will present a challenge to make it to the finals. The semi-final matches of the women’s section will be played from Wednesday while the last four matches of the men’s section will be played on Thursday. Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Lovlina is competing in the 75kg category for the first time in an international tournament.

She will take on Seong Suyeon of Korea in the semi-finals. World Championships 2022 bronze medalist Parveen (63kg) will take on Mongolia’s Uranbileg Shinetsetseg, while her competition debutante Preeti (57kg) will square off against Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Iri Senna of Japan. Apart from this, four other Indian women boxers Alfia Pathan (+81kg), Sweety (81kg), Ankushita Boro (75kg) and Meenakshi (52kg) will also stake claim for a place in the finals.

Shiv Thapa (63.5kg), who became the most successful Asian Championship boxer by ensuring a sixth medal in the competition, will take on two-time Asian Championships medalist Bakhodur Usmonov of Tajikistan in the men’s final four bout. Two-time Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Mohammad Husamuddin (57kg) will take on 2021 World Championships silver medalist Serik Temirzhanov of Kazakhstan. Narendra (above 92kg), Sumit (75kg) and Govind Kumar Sahni (48kg) will also face challenges in the semi-finals.
