Lovlina Borgohain won gold in Asian boxing competition, Hooda and Sweety also got gold

Olympic medalist and India’s star player Lovlina Borgohain has also brought laurels to India in the Asian Boxing Championships. Lovlina Borgohain has won the gold medal in the 75 kg final. In the title match, Lovlina defeated Ruzmetova Sokhiba of Uzbekistan 5-0. Overall, Lovlina has unilaterally won this match. Lovlina Borgohain Indian boxer who won the bronze medal in the women’s welterweight event at the 2020 Olympic Games. Borgohain is only the third Indian boxer to win a medal at the Olympics. She won a bronze medal at the 2018 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships and the 2019 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships.

 

Borgohain is the first female athlete and the second boxer from Assam to represent the state at the Olympics. He has also been awarded the Arjuna Award. The win was a morale booster for the 25-year-old Lovlina as she was in poor form after winning the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. She dropped out early in the World Championships and Commonwealth Games. The Assam boxer switched from 69kg to 75kg as her previous weight category is not included in the Paris Olympics. Besides Borgohain, Parveen Hooda (63kg), Sweety (81kg) and Alfia Khan (+81kg) also won gold medals at the ongoing Asian Boxing Championships in Amman, Jordan on Friday. Parveen defeated Kito Mai of Japan by 5-0 margin.

 

Sweety and Alfia then won the gold medal by defeating Kazakhstan’s Gulsaya Yerzan and Jordan’s Islam Husseli respectively. Sweety easily defeated Yerjan while Alfia’s opponent was eliminated in the first round by disqualification. Meenakshi, on the other hand, ended her campaign on her Asian Championship debut with a silver medal in the flyweight category (52kg). World Championships bronze medalist Parveen could not participate in the Commonwealth Games but she dominated against fourth seed Mai and won by unanimous decision.
