Mandhana the only Indian in the running for the ICC Cricketer of the Year award
Opener Smriti Mandhana is the only Indian in the race for the ICC Cricketer of the Year award in both the men’s and women’s categories. Mandhana will face England’s Nat Sciver, New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr and Australia’s Beth Mooney. In the men’s category, Pakistan captain Babar Azam, England Test captain Ben Stokes, Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza and New Zealand Test captain Tim Southee are in the race. Stokes is also in the running for the Test Cricketer of the Year award. Apart from him, Johnny Bairstow of England, Usman Khawaja of Australia and Kagiso Rabada of South Africa are also in the race.
Voting for the award will begin next week with cricket fans from around the world and the ICC’s elite voting committee able to cast their votes. Experienced media representatives will be included in this committee. Mandhana, who was the ICC’s best female cricketer in the year 2021, is once again in the running for the award. She has scored the most runs for India in all formats combined. He scored 594 runs in T20 last year and 696 runs in ODIs. Her performance in the Women’s World Cup and Commonwealth Games was also commendable. Stokes is a strong contender for the award in the men’s section.
England have won nine out of ten Tests under Stokes’ captaincy. He also scored 870 runs which included two centuries. Apart from this, he took 26 wickets last year.
