Manika defeats world number seven Chinese player, Sathiyan out

India’s top table tennis player Manika Batra pulled off an upset by defeating world number seven Chen Jingtong of China in the round of 16 of the ITTF-ATTU Asian Cup but G Sathiyan lost in the men’s singles pre-quarterfinals here on Thursday. In the Round of 16 match on the first day of the tournament, world number 44 Manika displayed a fine game to beat the third seeded Chinese 4-3. Earlier, world number 39 and top-ranked Indian G Sathiyan went down 3-4 to fifth seed Yukiya Ueda of Japan. Even though the Japanese player won 11-9, 11-8, 7-11, 9-11, 11-6, 10-12, 11-6, Sathiyan did not give up after falling behind in the first two games and At one point the score was leveled at 2-2 after making a spectacular comeback. Sathiyan will get the prize money of $2250 despite losing in the first round.
