Marcelo Tinelli submitted his resignation to the presidency of the LPF and called early elections

Marcelo Tinelli made his position as president of the Professional Soccer League (LPF) available and called for early elections on March 31, in a letter addressed to the 28 clubs that make up the First Division of Argentine soccer.

The businessman and television host thus hastily concluded his term, which expired in March 2024 and seriously entered a crisis in the face of a formal proposal made by 15 institutions on December 24.

«It is time to tackle essential issues. And I am convinced that for this it is essential to be more united than ever as First Division clubs. It is for this reason that, together with the members of the Board of Directors and the Board of Directors of the League, who accompany this note by signing, we invite the entire leadership to initiate conversations to seek new authorities of the LPF “, the note introduces.

“We have set the date of March 31, 2022 for the election of new authorities of the League, who complete the mandate in force until March 2024,” states the letter signed by Tinelli, the three vice-presidents Cristian Malaspina (Argentinos Juniors ), Hernán Arboleya (Lanús) and Mario Leito (Atlético Tucumán); the general director Eduardo Spinosa (Banfield) and the general secretary Sergio Rapisarda (Vélez), among others.

The candidates for the presidency to replace Tinelli will have time to present their candidacy until March 1, according to the Electoral Regulations of the Argentine Football Association (AFA).

«We firmly believe that this is the best way and that is why we must take this time to find the consensus and unity that the moment demands. As discussed with most of the clubs, I will remain in office until new authorities are elected. I trust that this scenario will lead to a list of unity with the maximum possible consensus, “he hoped.

The path to resignation : Marcelo Tinelli submitted his resignation to the LPF

Tinelli’s call for unity comes two weeks after denouncing a “devious (institutional) coup” with the request for removal required in the letter released by 15 clubs on Christmas Eve.

The representatives of Aldosivi de Mar del Plata, Lanús, Argentinos Juniors, Independiente, Gimnasia La Plata, Estudiantes de La Plata, Godoy Cruz de Mendoza, Rosario Central, Huracán, Defensa y Justicia, Arsenal, Colón de Santa Fe, Platense, Sarmiento and Central Córdoba de Santiago del Estero demanded an extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee within 72 hours of the presentation to discuss a change in the presidency of the LPF. Tinelli responded immediately with another letter in which he rejected that request and set the date of January 11, when the new 2022 championship is drawn, to discuss the political crisis, something that was finally aborted with the call for elections.

The following Tuesday, December 29, the 15 signing clubs plus Boca Juniors, Racing Club and Barracas Central participated in a meeting at the Puerto Madero offices in which it was agreed to ask Tinelli to set an election date for an orderly departure in terms of institutional.

The strongest message in the meeting that Tuesday was the presence of Juan Román Riquelme, Boca vice president, who had had a brush with the outgoing LPF holder before the classic with San Lorenzo from the last tournament, that the “Xeneize” had take on with juveniles for health reasons after a trip to Brazil.

In a note with Télam, the first vice president of the LPF, Cristian Malaspina, announced that the request for removal promoted by the Argentine soccer leadership responded to the null relationship between Tinelli and the president of the AFA, Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia.

«The lack of management is taking positions to all the clubs. Tinelli must acknowledge that he obviously does not have the time or desire to drive this boat, “said the head of Argentinos Juniors, one of those who could stand in the next elections.

The clubs demanded from Tinelli progress on issues related to television, online gambling, decree 12-12 repealed by Mauricio Macri, which eliminated reductions in tax charges, security and the exchange rate.

“Until the new leaders of the LPF are determined -by consensus or elections-, the League will continue to function fully, with the entire work team focused on the organization and implementation for the dispute of the tournaments and the defense of interests common, even in the midst of a fierce pandemic that permanently hinders the development and industry of our First Division, “Tinelli promised.
