Messi scored twice as Paris Saint-Germain beat Maccabi Haifa 7-2

Star player Lionel Messi scored two goals as Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) beat Maccabi Haifa 7-2 here on Tuesday and were among four teams to advance to the pre-quarterfinals of the Champions League football tournament. Messi scored in the 19th and 44th minutes to maintain his stellar form ahead of the World Cup. Kylan Mbappe (32nd and 64th) also scored two goals while Neymar (35th) and Carlos Soler (84th) scored one goal each. Sean Goldberg also scored a suicide goal for PSG in the 67th minute. Both goals for Maccabi Haifa were scored by Abdoulaye Sek in the 38th and 50th minutes.

The win ensured PSG and Benfica’s top two finishes in Group H. Both the teams have 11 points before the final round match. Apart from PSG and Benfica, Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund also made it to the last 16. Benfica beat Juventus 4-3. Juventus failed to make it to the knockouts for the first time since the 2013–14 season. Apart from Manchester City from Group C, Dortmund’s team also reached the pre-quarterfinals. Tuesday’s match between the two teams was a goalless match.

Chelsea took first place in Group E after beating Salzburg 2–1. Defending champions Real Madrid, who have already qualified, suffered a 2-3 loss against Leipzig in Group F. Leipzig have a good chance of qualifying as they take a three-point lead over Shakhtar Donesch. Shakhtar Donesch played out a 1-1 draw with Celtic.
