MI Cape Town to host Paarl Royals in ‘SA20’ league opening match

MI Cape Town team will start their campaign in the SA20 League (South Africa’s new domestic T20 league) against Paarl Royals in their opening match at Newlands Cricket Ground here on January 10. The full match schedule of 33 matches to be played at six venues was announced on Tuesday, two months before the start of South Africa’s top T20 league.

Adorned with international stars, MI Cape Town will try to enthrall the audience at its home ground Newlands. The team includes players like local legend Kagiso Rabada, Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan, England’s big-shot Liam Livingstone and emerging South African player Dewald Brevis. There is no dearth of stars in the Royals team. England’s limited-overs format captain Jos Buttler apart from 2019 World Cup-winning teammates Jason Roy and Eoin Morgan is part of the Royals.

Former player JP Duminy is the head coach of this team which also has the local trio of David Miller, Lungi Ngidi and Tabrez Shamsi. All the matches of this league will be broadcast on Viacom 18 Sports in India. “It is a great achievement for all of us to announce the schedule for the opening season of ‘SA20’,” said league commissioner Graeme Smith.

“Our plan is getting off the ground,” he said. We are definitely looking forward to seeing the best players in the world compete. Fans are looking forward to the start of the league on January 10 with the local derby between MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals.” The tournament will see each team play 10 matches, with five home matches. The final of this league will be played on February 11.
