Mirabai to lead Indian campaign in Weightlifting World Championships, injured Jeremy ruled out
An injury to Jeremy Lalrinnunga will rule out next month’s 2022 Weightlifting World Championships in which a four-member Indian team will be led by Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu. India’s first Youth Olympic champion Jeremy was injured during his gold medal-winning campaign at the Commonwealth Games in July. The 20-year-old from Mizoram has not recovered from thigh and hamstring injuries. He also missed the Asian Championship in October.
Indian head coach Vijay Sharma told PTI, “Jeremy is still recovering from the injury he sustained during the Commonwealth Games so he will not take part in this World Championship.” Sharma said, “Many lifters in the Commonwealth Games team are recovering from injuries, so we have selected four fit lifters. Commonwealth Games silver medalist Sanket Sagar, who suffered an elbow injury and underwent surgery, will also miss the December 5-16 championship in Bogota, Colombia.
Former world champion Chanu will be playing for the first time after winning her third medal and second gold at the Commonwealth Games.The four-member team includes Commonwealth Games champion Achinta Sheyuli in 73kg, silver medalist Bindiarani Devi and bronze medalist Gurdeep Singh. All these four lifters are currently in St. Louis, USA with coach Sharma. The Indian team will leave for Bogota on December 1. The World Championship is the first qualifying tournament for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Although it is an additional tournament which is not mandatory.

A weightlifter is mandated to participate in the 2023 World Championships and the 2024 World Cup under the 2024 Olympic Qualification Rules. Apart from these, the lifter has to participate in three other competitions. The team is as follows: Mirabai Chanu (49kg), Bindiarani Devi (59kg), Achinta Sheyuli (73kg) and Gurdeep Singh (+109kg).
