FIFA’s historic ‘Hand of God’ ball auctioned for $2.4 million

London. The ball with which Diego Maradona scored the famous ‘Hand of God’ goal against England in the 1986 World Cup has been auctioned for $2.4 million by the match’s referee. Ali bin Nasser, the Tunisian referee, had missed in that match that Maradona had scored with his hand. In the quarter-final match between Argentina and England in Mexico, that ball was kept by the referee.

The 36-year-old ball was sold at the Graham Budd auction in London on Wednesday for £2 million (about $2.37 million). Bin Nasser said before the auction that the time was right to share this ball with the world. He hoped that its buyer would put it up for public exhibition.

The first goal was popular
Argentina scored two goals in this match and both goals were scored by Maradona. While scoring the first goal, he wanted to score with a header, but instead of hitting the football with his head, he scored with his hand, which was strongly opposed by the England team. But the referee, who could not see Maradona scoring with his hand, refused to call it illegal. Argentina’s team had defeated England by this goal. This match remains a topic of discussion even today.

Maradona had accepted
Maradona himself admitted after scoring the goal and said that it was the hand of God, since then the goal scored by Maradona with his hand is known as “Hand of God”. After scoring this goal, the ball with which the match was being played has been auctioned after many years. This ball is considered historic because it led to a goal that had never happened before in FIFA history.
