Want justice for wrestlers but through legal process: Sports Minister Anurag Thakur

New Delhi. Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said on Friday that everyone wants justice for the wrestlers sitting on strike against the outgoing President of Wrestling Federation of India, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, but this is possible only after the completion of the legal process. Two days before Thakur’s statement, top wrestlers, who have been on strike for more than a month, had threatened to throw their medals in the river Ganga in Haridwar. The government also wants a fair probe, Thakur said in a question-and-answer session at an economic conference organized by Times Network. We all want justice to be done but for this we will have to wait for the completion of the legal process.

He said Delhi Police is probing the case which was registered against BJP MP Brij Bhushan following the report of the committee appointed by the government on allegations of sexual harassment. Asked if the action was being delayed because the accused was a BJP MP, he said, “There is no question of favoritism.” We are all in favor of early completion of the investigation.

Thakur said that the government accepted everything the wrestlers said and also formed a committee to investigate the allegations, in which members were added on their request. In addition, the Indian Olympic Association constituted the Committee of Administrators to manage the affairs of the WFI. He said, “Be it a sportsperson or a woman, if any atrocity has happened then she should get justice soon. The case of wrestlers is seven years old and in January we also asked them whether to file an FIR, then they said that they only want the intervention of the government.
