Ministry upset with top wrestlers not participating in international competition

New Delhi. The Sports Ministry is miffed with the country’s top wrestlers not participating in international tournaments due to their ongoing standoff with the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and its president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Top wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Ravi Dahiya, Deepak Punia, Anshu Malik and Sangeeta Mor have skipped the UWW Ranking Series tournaments in Zagreb and Alexandria as an inquiry panel is probing sexual harassment allegations against the WFI president. .

Brij Bhushan has stepped down from his post pending investigation. The move by the wrestlers has angered the government, which provides financial assistance to wrestlers under the ‘Target Olympics Podium Scheme’ (TOPS) for preparation and training. A ministry official said, “We are at a loss as to why they are not participating (in the tournament) when their demands have been met.

We need to give time to the committee to complete the investigation. It is the decision of the wrestlers and we cannot force anyone but they should not withdraw from the tournament. The day-to-day functioning of the WFI is being looked after by a six-member monitoring committee headed by boxing legend MC Mary Kom.
